"Have I told you this before..."
Mr. Hoffman says that almost every class period.
All of the year we did Upfront Magazine and worksheets that go along with it, they all had different stories to go along with them.
Mr. Hoffman is the Social Studies teacher at National Trail 7th grade.
Moses Moses was the first thing we learned this year. He was put into a basket at birth because the Egyptians were killing all male Israelite babies. He was found by the Pharaoh's daughter and was "adopted" by her. Moses saw an Egyptian slave driver beating a slave. Moses tackled the slave driver and he pick up a large rock and killed the him. Moses fled out to the desert after burying the body and stayed out for 50 years. He saw a burning bush and was told to go and set the Israelite people free from slavery. He was denied and unleashed 10 plagues. The last was death to the first born son. Pharaoh's son was one of the killed that night. He finally gave in and let the Israelite people go. They left and Pharaoh changed his mind and went after them. Pharaoh chased them to the Red Sea. Moses split the sea and crossed. Pharaoh's army went after them but before they got across Moses closed the sea and killed all the Egyptian Soldiers. |
Assyria
We learned about the Assyrian government and army for our second subject. The Assyrians were proclaimed as one of the strongest empires to ever exist. They conquered almost all of Mesopotamia. They were strong because they had well organized armies. Their foot soldiers were armed with spears and daggers. They also had experts with bow and arrows. The Assyrian army also had people on horseback that flanked the opposing army. They people on horseback road through battle cutting down the enemy soldiers. The Assyrians had iron. They were the first army to use iron weapons ad armor. How Did They Attack? The Assyrians attack villages and cities by tunneling under there walls. If they couldn't tunnel they climbed them. Battering rams were used to ram down doors and gates that they could not pass. |
Early Man
The 3rd thing that we learned about in Social Studies is Early Man. We learned about the 8 features every city needs. Eight Features *Cities- Developed when Nomads found good sources of food, water, and peaceful tribes to merge with.
*Central Government- To keep the peace in the settlement. *Job Specialization- Jobs other people can't do but certain people can. *Social Classes- Every city has social classes because not every person has the same traits. (Money, and Job) *Arts and Architecture- Every settlement is defined by the stuff they make and buildings they build. *Public Works- People to take care of the city. (Janitors, Bus drivers, and Builders) *Language and Writing- Language is important for Communication, without language you wouldn't be able to talk to each other. There would be no form of communication or proof anything happened without language and writing. |

Ancient Greece
We have been learning about the Greek's for a long time, we got done only a couple of weeks before we started this project. There are 2 major city states in Greece: Sparta, and Athens. Sparta Sparta focused mainly on military. They didn't care if you are smart or not, they just want you in the military. A famous Quote, "Come back on your shield or with your shield." As you can probably tell from that quote they are really dedicated in military. The Spartans had strong military power. They were in major battles like Thermopylae and Marathon. At Marathon they were trapped between 2 mountains. They pushed in hard and won. At Thermopylae they were trapped with 300 men and were brutally killed and they lost. Athens Athens were the other Greek City-State, they wanted there army to be smart as well as tough, in addition to military skills they learned how to read, write, make art, and math. As you can probably tell they didn't last very long with their army, they always had to look towards Sparta for protection. |
